do people say about us
Northland Secondary College is proud of its new $4 million manufacturing and technology facility, the Northland Technology Education Centre (Ntec). Ntec provides high quality training using industry-standard facilities and equipment in areas in which there are skills shortages in Darebin and Melbourne's North.
Ntec runs VET certificate courses in Engineering, Automotive, Electro-technology (both Shared Technology and Career Start for those wanting to be Electricians), Furnishing, Manufacturing Technology and Horticulture (Landscaping) to Year 10, 11 and 12 students in both VCE and the new Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). Students can also do full-time Pre-apprenticeship programs in Building & Construction, Engineering and Electro-technology (Career Start).
At Ntec we work with local industry, industry training boards, the Inner Northern Local Learning and Employment Network (INLLEN), schools, unions, TAFEs and Group Training companies to facilitate students' entry into apprenticeships, traineeships and further education, in particular at TAFE institutes, on completion of their courses.
The college has been designated a Leading School by the Victorian Dept of Education for innovation and leadership in the area of Technology and its establishment of Ntec. As a Leading School, the college is a state and nationwide model for the teaching of Technology and provides Technology courses not only to Northland students but 280 students from other public and private schools in Melbourne's North. Ntec also gets a constant stream of educators from around Australia visiting to learn about the model. Ntec also has a strong focus on integrating learning on sustainable energies.
In 2006 Northland Secondary College received the Training Initiative of the Year Award from the Manufacturing & Engineering Skills Advisory Board for the excellence of its courses at Ntec.
Ntec represents the type of quantum leap that industry leaders, parents and educators believe is necessary in the area of manufacturing and technology education. Ntec showcases the best of these industry sectors and their opportunities; it is a 21st century approach to overcoming a 19th century image.
The manufacturing industry is an important part of the national economy and the northern area of Melbourne has a long and important historical relationship with it. Generations of local residents have been employed and have developed successful careers in the industry.
For a significant period of time the manufacturing industry in our region (including auto, engineering and furniture) has been experiencing skill shortages as a result of a reduced number of young people entering the industry. Local manufacturing companies have reported significant, long-term difficulties in recruiting young people into the industry.
At Ntec we are committed to:
- Developing close industry partnerships and responding to industry concerns regarding skills shortages
- Providing the most comprehensive range of VET Technology programs for students in the region.
- Maximising students’ employment potential
- Broadening career options for students
- Encouraging young women and Indigenous students to pursue careers in manufacturing and technology

Re Chris, her son
“Chris now he wants to be at school…he is so much more confident…his self-esteem has increased…he was one of the sheep, now he is a leader…the change in Chris has been unbelievable…he is valued as a member of the school community…”
Viviane Lacey
Manager, Neighbourhood Renewal, North and West Metropolitan Region says:
"On recently visiting Northland Secondary College and NTEC, I discovered what an amazing place this is with many opportunities waiting for people who wish to expand their horizons. Ntec is geographically centrally located between the two Neighbourhood Renewal sites at Heidelberg West and East Reservoir. Ntec is well positioned to connect with these communities and will be a valuable partner to Neighbourhood Renewal, particularly for young people in the area of Employment and Learning. I look forward to growing our partnership and working within our communities"
Leigh Hubbard
Former Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) Secretary, writes:
"The value of the Ntec proposal is that it will provide a holistic education in relation to manufacturing, covering history and methods of manufacturing, together with technical skills in arrange of areas…It is an example of partnerships at work in the community…I see the Ntec proposal as a potential model that can be used in a number of locations around the state."
Noel Benton
