Koori Education
Northland SC is proud of its long-standing close relationship with the
Koori community. Over the past thirty years, many Indigenous students
have successfully completed their education at the college and gone on
to be leaders in their community.
This success was recognised byThe Royal Commission into
Black Deaths in Custody which singled out the school as an example of
what can be achieved at a mainstream school when the needs of Koori students
are accommodated. (Vol.33, 33.1.20)
Northland SC has sought to provide a curriculum inclusive of Aboriginal
knowledge, history and culture and bring the Koori and non-Koori community
together. Its efforts were recognised by the Australian Education Union
which in 2000 awarded the college the Award for Reconciliation
Koori students make up 25% of the student population, one
of the highest concentrations of any secondary schools in Melbourne.
The college has two Koori Educators, who work with college
staff to provide support to Koori students and their families as well
as advice about curriculum and culture.
